Use Outside the Approved Authorisation
In general, veterinary medicines should be used according to the conditions of use as set out in Summary of Product Characteristics (see
veterinary medicines products list
). However, there might not be suitable medicines authorised for every condition in every species.
National and EU legislation provide for the use of veterinary medicines in certain circumstances outside the strict conditions of use. Such usage is restricted to animals under the direct responsibility of veterinary practitioners and is intended to avoid unacceptable suffering among animals.
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is the responsible body for the operation of this system (the so-called ‘
cascade
’ system) and any queries should be directed to it (
info@agriculture.gov.ie
or Lo-call 1890 200 510).
