Since the problem of availability of veterinary medicines became apparent in the EU during the past decade there have been a number of international conferences and reports on the subject.  Among the most important has been a report by the Task Force on Availability of the Heads of Veterinary Medicines Agencies in 2007.  

A fundamental review of the European veterinary legislation is expected to commence in 2012. An international reflection on the experience with the current authorisation systems has already started by the EU Commission. The ongoing review is expected to provide an opportunity to develop legislative proposals to improve harmonisation of veterinary medicines throughout the EU.
