Irish Medicines Board Update Statement on Counterfeit Durex Condoms

16 March 2005

Tags: 2005

The Irish Medicines Board (IMB) states that a full investigation into the distribution of counterfeit Durex brand condoms has been underway since last week and is continuing. Indications from the wholesaler to date had indicated that the products had been distributed to retail pharmacies only.

The IMB can now confirm that Sundrelle Ltd, the distributor who imported the counterfeit Durex products from the UK, has supplied the fraudulent products to at least one non-pharmacy retail outlet. The outlet is the Texas Department Store, which has two stores located in Tullamore and Mullingar.

The IMB has seized the product available in these stores. The IMB can confirm that this stock is of the same batches of counterfeit Durex products that have been identified in its investigations to date. In light of this development today, the IMB is advising all purchasers of the affected Durex products, regardless of where purchased, to check for the following information on the products in their possession.

The two counterfeit batches identified carry the following information:

Product Name:     Durex Extra Safe 12 Pack
Batch number:     20602503
Expiry Date:        2007/11

Product Name:     Durex Fetherlite 12 Pack
Batch number:     VR3073 U or C or E or €
Expiry Date:        2008/02

The IMB is currently assessing all records of the distributors Sundrelle Ltd and will release further information as it becomes available.
