The Irish Medicines Board (IMB) today reiterated its warning against the dangers of purchasing medicines online, as it released details of a 66% rise in the quantity of illegal medicinal products detained during 2010. 822,484 dosage units of counterfeit and illegal medicines were detained by its enforcement section to the year end (494,502 units in 2009). It stated, it is particularly concerned by an almost fivefold increase in the number of illegal weight loss products detected, some of which when tested were found to contain the no longer permitted active substance sibutramine.
