Organisational Structure

The Organisational Structure of the Irish Medicines indicates the Board and Committees, and the various departments and reporting lines to the Chief Executive.

The Board of the IMB has nine members who are appointed by the Minister for Health. 

There are  three advisory committees, each with a maximum of twelve members. The Advisory Committee for Human Medicines and The Advisory Committee for Medical Devices are appointed by the Minister for Health while the Advisory Committee for Veterinary Medicines is appointed by the Minister for Health in consultation with the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

The statutory role of the advisory committees is to provide advice in cases where it is proposed to refuse to grant a licence for a medicinal product on any grounds relating to its safety, quality or efficacy. The advisory committees may appoint sub-committees. The Clinical Trials Sub-Committee is a sub-committee of the Advisory Committee for Human Medicines and the Board's experts on human medicines are members of an expert advisory sub-committee.  The Clinical Trials Sub-Committee meets each month except for August and December.The Board of the IMB meets six times a year. The advisory committees meet approximately six times per year, at intervals determined by the committee members and by pending business.

The Chief Executive is responsible for the day to day activities of the IMB with the help of an Management Committee composed of the heads of each department, Human Medicines, Veterinary Medicines, Finance & Corporate Affairs, IT and Change Management, Medical Devices, Compliance, Human Resources and Scientific Affairs. The Management Committee meets every two weeks.
